University of Kentucky Department of Gender and Women's Studies Awards Students
The University of Kentucky Department of Gender and Women's Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences recently gave awards to several students. The Department of Gender and Women's Studies at the University of Kentucky investigates gender broadly conceived, and the cultures and contributions of women worldwide from feminist/womanist perspectives. The purpose of the department is to develop and coordinate an interdisciplinary curriculum in Gender and Women's Studies at the undergraduate and graduate levels; support critical research, teaching and public programming in Gender and Women's Studies that take into account various beliefs about gender, race, class, and sexuality; and foster interdisciplinary collaboration. The Gender and Women's Studies Department aims to serve the university and the Commonwealth through promotion of equity and commitment to excellence.

University of Kentucky College of Arts and Sciences Students Named Undergraduate Research Ambassadors
The Office of Undergraduate Research at the University of Kentucky selected outstanding undergraduates from the College of Arts and Sciences for the Undergraduate Research Ambassador program. The students participated in the 2023-24 academic year. The program's mission is to increase awareness and create opportunities for students to actively engage in research. Ambassadors must demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential and be involved in mentored research.

University of Kentucky's Appalachian Studies Program Announces Honors
The University of Kentucky Appalachian Center & Appalachian Studies Program recently announced student awards. The Appalachian Center contributes to the land grant mission of UK by fostering community-university partnerships in research, learning and engagement in Appalachia. On UK's main campus, the center is a space for students, faculty, staff and community members to join forces in learning about and educating others about this region. The Appalachian Studies Program, like the Appalachian Center, has an active 40-year history at UK. It is an interdisciplinary program based in the College of Arts and Sciences.

University of Kentucky's Chellgren Center Inducts Freshmen Fellows
The University of Kentucky Chellgren Center for Undergraduate Excellence announces the 2024 class of Chellgren Student Fellows. The Chellgren Center Student Fellows Program aligns with the university's goal of cultivating undergraduate excellence by providing experiences that go beyond the classroom. Through the program, students become prepared for the next phase of their career, whether it be graduate school, a position in their field or a gap year dedicated to service. The program is open to all majors and takes place during the student's second year at the university. Outstanding faculty members from across campus serve as individual mentors for the Fellows. Through regular meetings and conversations, mentors will help students develop strategies for engaging in the intellectual life of the university. This year's cohort includes 29 freshmen.

University of Kentucky Inducts New Members Into Phi Beta Kappa
The University of Kentucky chapter of Phi Beta Kappa recently inducted 32 new members into the prestigious academic honor society. This year's induction ceremony, originally scheduled for April 22, was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Celebrating excellence in the liberal arts and sciences, Phi Beta Kappa elects more than 15,000 new members a year from 270 chapters across the United States. There are also nearly 50 alumni associations across the country that allow members to continue active affiliation with the society after graduation. "Phi Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest and most prestigious academic honor society, and these students' induction is a testament to their hard and fruitful academic labors during their time at UK," said Philip Harling, chapter president and UK College of Arts & Sciences professor of history. "It's an honor they've richly deserved, and it's a great pleasure to recognize their achievements in this way." University of Kentucky Students Receive Goldwater Scholarships
The University of Kentucky Office of Nationally Competitive Awards has announced that three UK students have been awarded Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships: The Goldwater Scholarship was designed to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. Since its first award in 1989, the foundation has bestowed 10,720 scholarships.

UK Arts and Sciences Students Named Gaines Fellows
The University of Kentucky Gaines Center for Humanities has selected 12 undergraduate students for its fellowship program. The Gaines Fellowship is presented in recognition of outstanding academic performance, demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, an interest in public issues and a desire to enhance understanding of the human condition through the humanities. Founded in 1984 by a gift from John and Joan Gaines, the Gaines Center for the Humanities is designed to enrich the study of the humanities at UK and functions as a laboratory for imaginative and innovative education on UK's campus.

The University of Kentucky Office of Nationally Competitive Awards has announced that three College of Arts & Sciences students have been offered Fulbright U.S. Student Program scholarships to travel abroad to teach, study or pursue research for the 2023-24 academic year. Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected based on academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. The Circle was established on May 2, 1925, and was recognized with a Superior Circle award from the national organization in 2018. "Being able to build community and meet as a chapter has definitely been a challenge this semester due to restrictions concerning COVID-19, but we were able to welcome our new members via a virtual induction ceremony," said 2020 Circle President Abby Vicars. "It was great to see the faces of all our new members who are committed to being leaders in their community and embodying ODK's ideals. We look forward to seeing what they accomplish as members of the Nu Circle and are eager to support them in their development as leaders in our community."

University of Kentucky A&S Students Named Chellgren Center Fellows
The University of Kentucky's Chellgren Center for Undergraduate Excellence recently named undergraduate fellows from the College of Arts & Sciences. The Chellgren Student Fellows Program is open to all majors and takes place during the student's second year at UK. During this time, students receive help understanding the process of research within their discipline, a research mentor to oversee a spring research project and assistance in preparing for the next phase of their career. Student Fellows also benefit from a variety of extracurricular events designed to broaden cultural and intellectual horizons.

University of Kentucky Appalachian Center honors 11 students with research awards
The University of Kentucky Appalachian Center is honoring 11 students with its annual research awards. "The Appalachian Center and Appalachian Studies Program are thrilled to support these students and their summer work," said Kathryn Engle, director of the center. "This group of students represents a range of disciplines and research interests." The James S. Brown Graduate Student Award for Research on Appalachia is given to honor the memory of James S. Brown, a sociology professor at UK from 1946 to 1982, whose pioneering studies of society, demography and migration in Appalachia (including his ethnography of "Beech Creek") helped to establish the field of Appalachian studies at UK and beyond. To be eligible, students must be actively enrolled in a master's or doctoral degree program at UK. The award must be used to meet the costs of doing research relevant to social life in Appalachia including travel, lodging, copying, interviewing, ethnography, data collection, archival research, transcribing and other legitimate research expenses. Up to $1,000 is awarded to each recipient. The recipients will present their research at Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress (SWAP) with Appalachian Studies Program faculty and students during the 2023-2024 academic year.
